Kasuga found a surprise at his old apartment door
Kasuga of Audrey remembers an unexpected gift at the apartment where he once lived—and what he noticed a couple of days later.
Before the story
Kasuga (春日) of the Japanese comedy duo Audrey (オードリー) recalls something that happened at an apartment where he used to live. His old hope of a surprise visit is part of the joke, not an invitation to visit anyone's home.
A little something on the doorknob
Audrey used to put on live talk events at my place for about a year. Back then I half-hoped someone who'd been to a show might drop by unannounced—as a surprise. It never happened—not while we were doing the shows, and not afterward.
Then one day I got home and found a letter and a plastic bag hanging from my doorknob. The letter said, ‘I came to one of your talk shows. I was nearby, so I left you a little something.’ Inside the bag was a block of firm tofu.
I was happy. A gift was a gift, even if it was tofu.
About two days later, I came home to find corned beef with the metal can peeled away, the exposed meat stuck right to my door. ‘That's a pretty bold gift,’ I thought. ‘But... I'm a little happy.’
Then I looked at the other doors. Three other apartment doors nearby had corned beef stuck to them too.
It was somebody's prank.
