This was in a rundown apartment I lived in a long time ago.
Rodents had started showing up. I’d come home from my part-time job and find the phone cord chewed on and half my cup noodles gone. Eventually, one of them burst right through a fusuma, one of those paper-covered sliding doors.
I thought, this is getting bad. So I went to the drugstore, where I found a can that gave off a smell rodents were supposed to hate. It said “POWERFUL” on it, and it was pretty expensive. I thought, this is the one to buy.
I popped the can open. Inside was something like a pale blue stone, and that was where the smell came from.
A smell that was supposed to keep rodents away.
So there I was in the middle of the night, playing video games, feeling perfectly at ease.
