I knew how to make an impression at the high jump
Sento Takemori remembers a school PE lesson and his plan to look cool in front of his classmates.
Before the story
Sento Takemori (竹森千人) recalls a high-jump lesson from elementary school.
My turn at the bar
I was a chubby kid in elementary school. A pretty vain one, too. I really wanted people to think I looked cool.
One day we were doing the high jump in PE. I was athletic and quick on my feet. We had to take a running start and jump over a bar about a meter high.
Some of the athletic boys were going over backward, back first. The girls would get all excited.
That gave me an idea. Do that, I thought, and the girls will like me.
Then it was my turn.
I charged up, launched myself—and everyone went, “Woooow!”
What I’d actually done was go under the bar backward.
I hadn’t jumped over it.
I’d gone right underneath.
Well, that would get a reaction, wouldn’t it?
