Nobu remembers his dad

In this story, Nobu of the Japanese comedy act Vintage recalls getting caught smoking in his bedroom. He was in eighth grade—around 13 or 14 years old.

When my old man walked in

I'm Nobu from Vintage.

My dad's kind of an odd guy.

He used to be a Buddhist monk. Then he got his barber's license, went from barber to office worker, from office worker to company president, and wound up unemployed.

Back then, I thought smoking looked cool.

So in eighth grade, I was smoking in my room when my old man walked in. A normal dad would've yelled, “Don't smoke!” Right?

But my dad yelled, “Don't smoke cigarettes with more tar than mine!”

What kind of thing is that to get mad about? So of course I talked back.

“More tar? What's that supposed to mean?”

That's when he got physical. I figured I was in for a slap, or maybe a knock on the head.

But that's not what I got.

What came flying right in front of me was my dad's heel.

In that tiny bedroom of mine, my old man had launched into a somersault heel kick…

Well, my dad's certainly got some energy.

Editor's note: Tar ratings and that kick

Japanese cigarette packs list a tar amount, used as a shorthand for a cigarette's strength. “More tar” means a stronger cigarette here.

The move Nobu names is an abise-geri, a martial arts kick that involves flipping forward and bringing the heel down.
