Shun goes shirt shopping in Hawaii
A trip for his brother’s wedding gave Shun time to look for an aloha shirt—and try out his English.

Comedian Shun (ヴィンテージ・俊) recalls a shopping trip during a visit to Hawaii for his brother’s wedding.
Looking for an aloha shirt
Hi, Shun here! I might be a nobody in comedy, but in Hawaii, I’m seriously, seriously—I mean seriously—famous.
I went to Hawaii for my older brother’s wedding.
It was ridiculously Hawaii. The smell of coconuts and everything. Exactly the place I’d imagined.
After the wedding, I thought I’d check out some secondhand clothing shops while I was there. About a half-hour drive from Waikiki, I found one run by locals called Eitīzu.
I thought, this is a great shop. I’ve got to get an aloha shirt. I picked one up and tried asking for a lower price. They answered, but I couldn’t understand a thing. My English was nonexistent.
Japanese celebrities had been there, too. Up above, the shop had all these photos of famous customers. Quite a lineup.
Ayumi Hamasaki, Tsuyoshi Domoto, George Tokoro, Hiromi. Under the pictures were little labels with things like “Singer,” “Musician” and “Actor.”
They still wouldn’t lower the price, so I kept saying:
“I am very comedian.”
“Discount, please, very comedian.”
And they actually knocked fifteen dollars off! A great souvenir. I kept wearing that shirt afterward.
Later, a couple of friends went to Hawaii. As soon as they got back to Narita, they called me.
“You’re amazing! We went to that secondhand shop you told us about. They had all those celebrity photos—Hamasaki, Domoto, George Tokoro, Hiromi… and then you, Shun. The label underneath said ‘Very Comedian’!”
…I’m ridiculously famous in Hawaii.
