How we counted

The lines are machine transcripts of live recordings, so the counts are close, not exact. A routine recorded twice counts once. A line counts for a form when the form appears in it. The tag says who you can copy the form with: Everyday is fine with most people; Just recognize means understand it, but don’t say it.

Quick answers

What are the most common everyday Japanese phrases?

In 174,812 lines from 1,905 live comedy routines, the most common spoken forms are お前 — “you” (rough); 〜じゃない — “isn’t it?” / rough “isn’t”; 〜んだよ — explaining, insisting, complaining; 俺 — “I, me” (casual, male); いや — “no, no…” to start a comeback.

Can I use casual Japanese with anyone?

No. Everyday forms are fine with most people, casual ones with friends and coworkers you joke with, and some only with close friends. A few are rude: learn to understand them, not to say them. Every form on Ukeru carries a tag that tells you which.

Where do these numbers come from?

From Ukeru’s library of 1,905 live comedy routines by 283 Japanese comedians, transcribed by machine: 174,812 lines in all. Counts are close, not exact, and they grow as the library grows.
